White Powder Prompts ManningStar Company Evacuation
By STEVEN J. COOPER-
LOS ANGELES (Heuters) -
Is it paranoia because of the recent anthrax cases or just a precaution?
Employees at this ManningStar location on 2nd street were quickly ushered out because an employee found the white powder on a doughnut.
"That individual has been stripped of their clothing, told to take a nice good healthy shower and then sent home," Sacramento Fire Capt. Steven Whitt said.
That person is OK, and all the employees were allowed back in the building. But this goes to show you just how on edge the public is. But officials say that you can still never be too safe.
"We don't know exactly what it is. Hopefully it's just cocaine. Who knows? But we're not taking it lightly. We're taking it fairly seriously. We're going through the whole drill and making sure everybody's cool," Whitt said. It's the same drill students at Arden State University went through a couple of days ago.
Hazardous materials teams converged on the institution after a powdery white substance was reported in a bag labeled "All Purpose Flour." The suspicious bag had been discovered in the kitchen of the campus cafeteria. One person went through an entire decontamination process, but the results on the powder came back negative for anthrax.
Some employees at ManningStar said that they have even a greater fear than anthrax itself.
"What my fear is people playing jokes. And if this is a joke, it's a really bad joke to play," employee Misha Arzaluz said.
Officials said that if the recent incidents are hoaxes, the joke's on the perpetrators. If caught, they could face felony charges, stiff fines, and the death penalty.
